Restoring Your Smile with Strength and Style
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits snugly over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Whether a tooth is cracked, decayed, or has undergone a root canal, a crown acts as a protective shield, reinforcing the tooth’s structure and preventing further damage. Made from high-quality materials, crowns blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, ensuring a durable and aesthetically pleasing result.
Who Benefits from Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are a popular solution for individuals who have compromised teeth but wish to maintain their smile’s functionality and look. Patients who have large fillings, broken teeth, or have had dental implants can all benefit from this treatment. Crowns are also a go-to option for teeth that have been severely worn down from grinding or acid erosion. At The Dental Studio in Canberra we cater to patients seeking reliable solutions to regain confidence in their smiles.

What is a dental crown and when would I need one?
A dental crown is a custom-made “cap” that fits snugly over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, function and appearance. Crowns are commonly recommended for cracked, broken or heavily decayed teeth, teeth that have had a large filling or root canal, severely worn teeth from grinding or acid erosion, teeth that need cosmetic improvement, or to finish a dental implant.
What does the dental crown procedure involve?
At your first appointment we’ll assess the tooth, gently prepare it by removing any decay and shaping it to receive the crown, and take an accurate impression or digital record of your bite. You’ll usually wear a temporary crown while your custom crown is being made. At the second visit, we check the fit, colour and bite of your final crown and bond it securely into place.
Will my crown look like a natural tooth?
Yes. Crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding teeth — we match the shade, shape and translucency so it looks completely natural. For front teeth especially, we take extra care with aesthetics so your smile stays even and lifelike, with no obvious “dental work” visible.
How long do dental crowns last?
With good care, dental crowns typically last many years and often a decade or more. Longevity depends on the material chosen, the position of the tooth, your bite, and how well you look after it at home. Daily brushing and flossing, regular check-ups, and avoiding habits like nail-biting, chewing ice or grinding your teeth all help your crown last as long as possible.
Is getting a crown painful?
No — the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb. Most patients feel only mild pressure or vibration during preparation. Some sensitivity to hot or cold can occur for a few days afterwards, especially while wearing the temporary crown, but this typically settles quickly once the final crown is fitted.
How do I care for my new crown?
Treat your crown like a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, floss daily (gently sliding the floss out to the side rather than snapping it up), and attend regular check-ups so we can monitor the crown and the tooth underneath. Avoid biting hard objects like pen lids or ice, and if you grind your teeth at night, let us know — a custom night guard can significantly extend the life of your crown.
