What's classed as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any oral health issue that needs prompt attention to relieve pain, stop bleeding, save a tooth, or prevent a problem from getting worse. Common emergencies we treat include severe or sudden toothache, cracked or broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost fillings or crowns, dental trauma from accidents or sport, swelling or signs of infection, and pain that’s stopping you from eating or sleeping.
Can I get a same-day emergency appointment?
Yes. We keep dedicated same-day appointment slots open for emergency patients so you’re not left waiting in pain. Call us as early in the day as possible and we’ll get you in as quickly as we can — usually the same day. Both adults and children are welcome.
What happens during an emergency dental appointment?
We focus on getting you out of pain first. Your visit will typically include a focused examination, any necessary X-rays to find the underlying cause, immediate pain relief, and a clear explanation of what’s happening and what’s needed next. Where possible we’ll treat the issue on the spot; if more complex follow-up care is required, we’ll plan the next steps with you.
I've knocked out a tooth — what should I do before I get to the clinic?
Time is critical. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white top), not the root. If it’s dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline — don’t scrub it. If you can, place it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If that’s not possible, store it in milk or saliva and call us immediately. The sooner you’re seen (ideally within 30–60 minutes), the better the chance of saving the tooth.
What can I do to manage pain before my emergency appointment?
Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water, use a cold compress against the cheek for swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, and try to keep the area clean. Avoid very hot, cold or hard foods on the affected side until you’re seen.
Do you treat children for dental emergencies as well?
Absolutely. We see patients of all ages, including babies and children with dental trauma, knocked-out baby or adult teeth, toothache, or injuries from falls and sport. Our team is experienced in keeping young patients calm and comfortable, and we’ll always explain what’s happening to both child and parent in a reassuring, age-appropriate way.
