Professional Care for a Healthy Smile
Dental cleanings and exams are essential preventive treatments that help maintain oral health and prevent future dental issues. A routine dental cleaning involves the removal of plaque and tartar build-up that daily brushing and flossing might miss. During an exam, your dentist carefully inspects your teeth and gums for any signs of decay, gum disease, or other potential concerns. This comprehensive approach ensures your smile stays fresh and healthy, minimising the risk of more complicated
procedures down the track.
Ideal for All Ages
Routine dental cleanings and exams are recommended for everyone, from young children to seniors. Children benefit from early exposure to these visits as it helps foster good oral hygiene habits and prevents issues such as cavities. Adults and older patients often require consistent check-ups to catch any age-related concerns, such as gum recession or enamel wear. In Canberra The Dental Studio ensures each patient receives personalised care tailored to their specific needs and oral health history.

What's included in your check-up and clean appointment?
Your visit at The Dental Studio is fully comprehensive and completed in a single appointment. It includes a full mouth examination, all necessary X-rays (full mouth and bitewings), an oral cancer screening, bite and TMJ (jaw joint) assessment, airway evaluation, intraoral photographs, a professional scale and polish, fluoride application where needed, and a personalised treatment plan discussion.
How often should I have a dental check-up and clean?
For most patients, every six months is ideal. Regular visits allow us to remove tartar that brushing can’t reach, detect decay or gum disease at the earliest stage, and keep treatment simple and straightforward. Some patients — such as those with gum disease, a history of decay, or who smoke — may benefit from more frequent visits, and we’ll recommend the right interval for you.
What's the difference between a professional clean and brushing at home?
Brushing and flossing remove soft plaque, but within 24–72 hours any plaque left behind hardens into tartar (calculus), which bonds firmly to the tooth and cannot be removed at home. A professional clean uses an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments to safely lift away tartar above and below the gumline, followed by polishing to smooth the surface and remove stains.
Does a dental clean hurt?
For most patients a clean is completely comfortable — you’ll feel mild vibration and water from the scaler, and some pressure during polishing. Sensitivity can occur if there’s heavy tartar build-up or gum inflammation, but our team is known for being gentle and will adjust technique, slow down, or use topical numbing whenever you need it.
Why do you check my jaw joint (TMJ), airway and screen for oral cancer at every visit?
The mouth doesn’t function in isolation. Clenching, grinding, headaches, jaw clicking and disrupted sleep are often linked to TMJ or airway issues, and early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves outcomes. Including these checks at every appointment means we catch problems early — long before they cause pain, damage or more complex treatment.
What happens if you find a problem during my exam?
We’ll show you exactly what we’ve found using your X-rays and intraoral photos, so you can see it for yourself. You’ll receive a clear written treatment plan with options and priorities — there’s never any pressure to book on the spot. You decide what to do and when.
