Introduction
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once it has integrated with the bone, it supports a crown, bridge or denture. Implants are one option for replacing missing teeth, alongside bridges and dentures, and your dentist will help you compare them.
Features of dental implants
- Fixed in place: an implant crown or bridge is fixed and does not need adhesive, so it does not move when you eat or speak the way a loose denture can.
- Independent support: unlike a bridge, a single implant does not need the neighbouring teeth to be shaped to support it.
- Designed for chewing and speech: implants are designed to support chewing and speech. How they feel and function varies between people.
- Made to match: the crown is colour-matched and shaped to the surrounding teeth, as closely as clinically possible.
- Supports the surrounding area: replacing a missing tooth may help reduce the movement of neighbouring teeth into the gap.
- Long-term option: with good home care and regular reviews, implants are intended to be a long-term option. How long they last varies between patients.
Results vary from person to person and all treatment carries risks.

Treatment Risks page.
What to expect
- Consultation: examination, medical history and imaging where clinically indicated, then a written plan with options, risks and costs.
- Planning: 3D imaging helps your dentist assess bone and nearby structures and plan the implant position.
- Placement: the implant is placed under local anaesthetic, with the aim of achieving stable integration.
- Healing: integration with the bone usually takes a few months. Some cases need bone grafting first.
- Restoration: your crown or bridge is made and fitted, followed by regular reviews.
