Risks and considerations
All dental treatment has risks and results vary from person to person. Your dentist will explain the risks and alternatives that apply to you before you decide.
Treatment can take months to years and needs regular reviews. Risks include tooth and gum soreness, root shortening, gum recession, decalcification, decay and gum disease if oral hygiene is poor, tooth mobility, changes to the bite, and jaw joint discomfort. Aligners must be worn as directed and results depend on this. Teeth can move back after treatment, so retainers are needed long term and replacement retainers cost extra. Some cases need extra procedures such as small attachments, reshaping between teeth or refinements. The predicted outcome is a plan only and the final result cannot be guaranteed. Not all cases can be treated with aligners.
